Higher education and research

Since the early 1980’s, the CSO has developed a vast research program on higher education and research.
Research conducted by Erhard Friedberg and Christine Musselin between the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s created a broad knowledge-base concerning the way universities function.

Over the years, their work expanded to include the relationships between public authorities and higher education institutions, as well as the study of university policies at both a domestic and European level, analysis of the academic profession, and the academic labor market.

Their work has been comparative in nature from the outset, in that their research on French universities has always been situated in an international context. This went far beyond the collection of empirical data to create a rich, precise theoretical framework. The results of the “Higher Education and Research” program and its current focus are representative of the theoretical and thematic enrichment which has been the hallmark of the laboratory over the past fifteen years.

This research program incorporates perspectives that are currently at the foundation of the three core trajectories of the CSO: the organizational perspective, higher education management, and a sociological perspective on labor markets and academic careers.

The arrival in March 2007 of a new researcher, Jérôme Aust, has further bolstered this program’s development. A number of dissertations, either in progress or finished, have also strengthened this program.

Sciences Po’s active support has been crucial to the development of this program. Thus, since 2001, the CSO has regularly organized seminars of presentations of French and international research on higher education and research at Sciences Po. In addition to this, Sciences Po supported the creation of EUREDOCS, which is a network of doctoral students and recent doctorates whose work focuses on changes in higher education and research in Europe.

Finally, this research program is part of other networks. Since September 2007, Christine Musselin has been the director of RESUP ("Réseau d’étude sur l’enseignement supérieur" – Higher education research network) and has been the Chair of CHER (Consortium for Higher Education Research).
