Jens Beckert is director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (Cologne – Germany) since 2005. His research interests are the role of the economy in society, especially based on studies of markets, organizational sociology, sociology of inheritance, sociological theory. He is the author of many books, for instance Inherited Wealth, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2008 (traduction anglaise par Thomas Dunlap) and Beyond the Market. The Social Foundations of Economic Efficiency, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2002, and coedited with Milan Zafirovski, the International Encyclopedia of Economic Sociology,London, Routledge, 2006.

Jens Beckert is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Cologne. He is the Chair of the of the Economic Sociology Section of the German Sociological Association (DGS) and of the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE), which is a joint international PhD Program of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) and the Department of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.

Jens Beckert received many honors, especially 1st Prize of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation (2007) for articles in the social sciences, and the Price of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Academy of Science in 2005.

A series of workshops is organized by Sciences Po and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (Sciences Po, 3-5 December 2008). Jens Beckert gives a paper : "Valuation and price formation in contemporary art" in the same workshop as Christine Musselin, CSO director, and Pierre François/CSO (December 4, 9.30)
